Mentorship in the UBC Department of Medicine
Mentoring a junior faculty member through the challenges of establishing a career, understanding the academic environment and finding life balance can be stimulating and rewarding. Their success will be enhanced by this program and the commitment of mentors will be valued and recognized as an important contribution to the Faculty and University. We have all experienced the role of a junior faculty member and variably benefited from the mentoring of senior colleagues.
Dr. Norman Wong established the Department of Medicine’s Mentoring Program in January 2005. Dr. John Cairns was the Director from July 2010 to February 2018, and Dr. Diane Lacaille was the Director from March 2018 to September 2020. Dr. Sharlene Gill assumed the role in October 2020. The program envisages every new tenure track, grant tenure track or partner track department member will have a welcoming and supportive relationship with an established academic mentor throughout the initial years of their appointment and until their achievement of tenure and/or promotion to Associate Professor. The mentor will establish a secure and confidential environment of trust within which to share their wisdom and experiences, and to coach, challenge and sponsor their mentee.

Equity & Inclusion in the UBC Department of Medicine
The UBC Department of Medicine strives to cultivate a teaching, learning and working environment that is equitable, accepting, inclusive and free of discrimination and harassment. In conjunction with the University of British Columbia and the Faculty of Medicine, the UBC Department of Medicine works to bridge gaps in equity within the Department by identifying principal concerns, developing equity guidelines, and educating division heads and directors. We work to ensure equitable hiring practices by raising awareness, broadening candidate pools and standardizing candidate selection methods. We promote and support professional development and networking opportunities for all of our faculty and trainees. We integrate equity principles into our training programs and academic activities by engaging our educational program directors in equity initiatives.
