Françoise Baylis is University Research Professor at Dalhousie University. She is a member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Nova Scotia. In this grand round presentation, “Altered Inheritance: The Art and Ethics of Designing Babies”, Dr. Baylis will discuss some of the ideas explored in her book: “Altered Inheritance: CRISPR and the Ethics of Human Genome Editing”, a finalist for a PROSE 2020 award. We are entering a new era of human evolution with the advent of CRISPR technology, which allows scientists to modify our genes. This technology shows great promise for therapeutic use, but it also raises thorny ethical, legal, political, and societal concerns because it can be used to make permanent changes to future generations. Dr. Baylis is a philosopher whose innovative work in bioethics, at the intersection of policy and practice, has stretched the boundaries of the field.  Her work challenges us all to think broadly and deeply about the direction of health, science and biotechnology. It aims to move the limits of mainstream bioethics and develop more effective ways to understand and tackle public policy challenges in Canada and abroad.

Dr. Arthur Dodek was first appointed at St. Paul’s Hospital and UBC in July 1972 and was among British Columbia’s first American Board Certified Cardiologists and recipient of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Fellowships in Cardiology. He was pivotal in the growth and development of the Division of Cardiology and the Department of Medicine at St. Paul’s Hospital and was always at the forefront of new techniques and state‐of‐the‐art medical care. Dr. Dodek was the first to insert a Swan‐Ganz catheter at St Paul’s Hospital in 1972 and performed the first valvuloplasty in 1985. Dr. Dodek had a parallel interest in medical ethics, published on the topic and thereafter was chair of the Ethics committee at College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC, and served as president 2007‐2009. Dr. Dodek has established this lectureship in gratitude for his positive experiences at St. Paul’s Hospital.
