Medicine in the Fraser region is evolving quickly, and so is the need to train specialists where communities are growing. Dr. Birinder Mangat, an academic general internal medicine and hypertension specialist in the UBC Department of Medicine, is helping lead that shift as Program Director of the Fraser UBC Internal Medicine Residency Program, launched in 2024.

Through his work as a Clinical Professor in the UBC Department of Medicine and his contributions across North America, he has helped shape the field through research, education, and leadership. This year, that dedication was recognized with the Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP) Distinguished Member Award, the organization’s highest honour, reserved for those who have made an exceptional and lasting contribution to the field.

Researchers at the UBC Faculty of Medicine have been awarded nearly $10 million from the Government of Canada and partners to advance cancer prevention research and improve early detection. The funding supports five UBC-led projects focused on preventing cancer before it starts, enhancing early detection, and improving outcomes across Canada and beyond.
