Research Interests

heart failure; cardiac resynchronization therapy; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; epidemiology, remote monitoring

Research Summary

My research is focused on improving quality of life and outcomes for patients with heart failure, by addressing comorbidities, using implantable and external devices, remote monitoring, and improving systems of care. I have 61 peer-reviewed publications (23 as 1st, 10 as 2nd, and 4 senior author), h-index 24.

Research Highlights

Personal

I am Assistant Professor at UBC and holder of the Dr. Charles Kerr Distinguished Scholar in Heart Rhythm Management. I completed my Doctorate of Medicine research degree at Glasgow University, focused on the intersection between heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. I moved to Liverpool for cardiology and fellowship training in Europe’s highest volume device centre, focusing on pacing and cardiac resynchronization therapy. There I completed a Masters of Public Health focusing on the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease, population modelling, and health systems.

This dual training and certification in Heart Function and Heart Rhythm management provides an innovative perspective on integration of technology with chronic disease management. I am currently Physician Lead for the Regional Heart Failure Program in Vancouver Costal Health and Physician Advisor for the provincial remote monitoring and heart failure strategies at Cardiac Services BC.

I have presented at numerous national and international conferences on the subject of cardiovascular disease in COPD (including British Cardiac Society and European Society of Cardiology). I authored the Oxford Handbook of Heart Failure chapter addressing concurrent lung disease, and the ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine 3rd edition chapter on Lung disease. My work is referenced in international HF guidelines, and I am currently participating in a Lancet Global Commission on COPD.
