Dr. Miles Marchand (Cardiology) awarded the 2023 Canadian Medical Association Award for Young Leaders (Resident)

Dr. Miles Marchand (Cardiology) is receiving the CMA Award for Young Leaders (Resident) in recognition of his exemplary creativity, initiative and commitment to making a difference at the local, provincial/territorial or national level.

Dr. Miles Marchand is determined to enhance cardiovascular care in Canada’s Indigenous populations.

The first First Nations cardiology fellow in Canada, he recently co-authored a call to action in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology Opens in a new window highlighting disparities in cardiovascular care and outcomes in Indigenous Canadians, and practical tips for health care providers to address them.

Thanks to a $5-million grant from the Canadian Institute for Health Research, Dr. Marchand is also helping to establish the Canadian Heart Function Alliance Opens in a new window, where his role will be to improve outcomes for Indigenous patients with congestive heart failure.

At the University of British Columbia, where Dr. Marchand was chief medical resident in internal medicine, he developed an anti-racism and Indigenous health curriculum for fellow residents, to improve their cultural humility as well as their knowledge of the genetic, socioeconomic and historical context of illness in Indigenous patients.

“As the first First Nations cardiology fellow in Canada, it’s clear Miles is motivated to make a major impact on Indigenous cardiovascular health.”

Dr. Laura Arbour, Professor, University of British Columbia

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Marchand on this wonderful achievement!
