It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Robert (Bob) Wakefield on September 30, 2024. His loss is felt profoundly within the UBC Department of Medicine and the General Internal Medicine community.
Dr. Wakefield was a clinical faculty member in the UBC Division of General Internal Medicine, where he also had a special interest and focus on geriatrics.
Dr. Wakefield completed his undergraduate studies in Honours Chemistry at the University of British Columbia (1965 – 1968), his medical degree at Stanford University’s Medical School (1968 – 1973), and residencies in Internal Medicine at Emory University’s Hospitals in Atlanta, Georgia (1973 – 1975) and the University of British Columbia Hospitals (VGH, 1975 – 1977). He held leadership positions as the Medical Director of the Banfield Extended Care Unit and Medical Director of Residential and Transitional Care for the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. Dr. Wakefield demonstrated academic distinction, dedicated service and inspiring leadership throughout his career until he retired from his practice in 2015.
Dr. Wakefield will be remembered as a wonderful colleague, teacher, and friend known for his genuine, thoughtful, and kind nature. His contributions will be remembered, and he will be greatly missed.
