Dr. Diane Lacaille and Dr. Derin Karacabeyli Honored with Prestigious ACR Awards

The UBC Department of Medicine is proud to recognize the exceptional achievements of Dr. Diane Lacaille, Professor in the Division of Rheumatology and Scientific Director of Arthritis Research Canada, and Dr. Derin Karacabeyli, a research trainee at Arthritis Research Canada. Both were celebrated at the 2024 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Convergence in Washington, DC, for their outstanding contributions to the field of rheumatology.

Excellence in Investigative Mentoring: Dr. Diane Lacaille

Dr. Lacaille was awarded the Excellence in Investigative Mentoring Award, a recognition of her significant contributions to mentoring future leaders in rheumatology research and practice. As an internationally recognized researcher and clinician, Dr. Lacaille’s groundbreaking work spans the development of arthritis care innovations, such as the Making It Work program to prevent work disability, and co-developing culturally safe arthritis services with Indigenous communities.

Throughout her career, she has prioritized mentoring graduate students, early-career scientists, and clinical fellows. Many of her mentees have advanced to hold leadership positions, a testament to her impactful guidance.

“Working alongside talented individuals and watching their growth and success is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career,” Dr. Lacaille shared. “I am privileged to mentor bright, enthusiastic trainees whose curiosity and accomplishments inspire me daily.”

Distinguished Fellow Award: Dr. Derin Karacabeyli

Dr. Karacabeyli was presented with the Distinguished Fellow Award, which celebrates clinical and research fellows in rheumatology training programs who demonstrate exceptional promise. His research focuses on promoting health and advancing care for individuals with rheumatic diseases.

“Being a recipient of the 2024 ACR Distinguished Fellow Award is an incredible honour. I am grateful to have a wonderful network that has supported me as I pursue my passion for research and health promotion in rheumatology,” Dr. Karacabeyli said. “Celebrating this achievement alongside Dr. Lacaille, one of my mentors, makes this recognition even more special.”
