Four UBC Department of Medicine Faculty Awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal

We are proud to share that Dr. Chris Carlsten (Head, Division of Respiratory Medicine), Dr. Stephen Lam (Clinical Professor, Division of Respiratory Medicine), Dr. Myp Sekhon (Clinical Associate Professor, Division of Critical Care Medicine), and Dr. Thalia Field (Associate Professor, Division of Neurology) have each been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of their outstanding contributions to health research and care in Canada.

This national honour celebrates individuals who have made a significant impact in their field and community. The medal symbolizes unity, inclusivity, and service to Canada and was coordinated by national health organizations including the Canadian Lung Association, Lung Cancer Canada, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Dr. Chris Carlsten was nominated by the Canadian Lung Association for his impactful work on air pollution and occupational lung health. His research investigates how pollutants such as diesel exhaust affect lung function over time and increase the risk of chronic respiratory conditions. As a clinician-scientist, he also cares for patients exposed to environmental and workplace toxins, helping to translate cutting-edge research into practical care and public health solutions.

Dr. Stephen Lam was jointly nominated by the Canadian Lung Association and Lung Cancer Canada for his leadership in lung cancer research and screening innovation. His work has advanced early detection and risk assessment through the development of prediction tools, the use of AI in interpreting screening CT scans, and improved bronchoscopic techniques for identifying early-stage lung cancer. His research helped lead to the launch of Canada’s first province-wide lung cancer screening program, implemented in B.C. in 2022.

Dr. Myp Sekhon was nominated by the Heart and Stroke Foundation for his outstanding contributions to heart and brain health in Canada. His clinical and research leadership in the field of critical care, particularly around brain injury and recovery, has had a lasting impact on both policy and patient outcomes. This recognition reflects not only his expertise, but also his unwavering commitment to advancing lifesaving research and improving care for Canadians affected by heart and stroke-related conditions.

Dr. Thalia Field was also nominated by the Heart and Stroke Foundation in recognition of her significant contributions to heart and brain health in Canada. Through her clinical leadership and research in stroke care and prevention, Dr. Field continues to make a lasting impact on improving outcomes for patients across the country. This recognition highlights her dedication to advancing care, research, and awareness for those affected by stroke.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Carlsten, Dr. Lam, Dr. Sekhon and Dr. Field on this prestigious recognition. Their dedication to advancing health through research, innovation, and clinical excellence continues to shape the future of medicine across B.C., Canada, and beyond.
