Dr. Anita Palepu appointed Head, Division of General Internal Medicine

It is with great pleasure that we announce that Dr. Anita Palepu will assume Headship of the UBC Division of General Internal Medicine effective September 1, 2015.

Dr. Anita Palepu has been a Full Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine since 2008.  She has made numerous administrative contributions to the department. She has been the Director of the Department of Medicine’s Clinical Investigator Program since 2004 and the Director of the General Internal Medicine Specialty Fellowship Program since 2006.  She has also been a member of several Departmental committees including the Equity Committee, Mentoring Committee and the Recruitment and Resources Committee.  Since 2013, she has been a member of the Leadership Advisory Group to the UBC Senior Advisor to the Provost on Women Faculty.  She was the Program Director for the Division of General Internal Medicine, the Postgraduate Education Director at St.  Paul’s Hospital, a member of the Faculty of Medicine Task Force on Clinical Research, a member of the Finance Committee at St. Paul’s Hospital, a member of the Pharmacoeconomics Initiative Scientific Committee, as well as a member of the Education Committee of the Therapeutics Initiative. As an Internal Medicine specialist at St. Paul’s Hospital, Dr. Palepu is active in teaching residents and medical students in both the inpatient and clinic setting.  She has been a reviewer and editor for many peer-reviewed journals.  She has been an Associate Editor with the Annals of Internal Medicine since 2010.  She was the President of the International Society of Urban Health in 2008 and is a former Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Scholar.  She has published a total of 93 peer-reviewed papers.

At this time we would also like to express our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Barry Kassen, who is stepping down as Head, UBC Division of General Internal Medicine.  He will remain in the role of Head, Division of Community Internal Medicine.  Barry has done an outstanding job and we know that Dr. Palepu will continue this tradition of excellence.
