Dr. Anita Palepu Co-Leads Groundbreaking AI and Health Network

We are proud to share the launch of the new UBC AI and Health Network, co-led by Dr. Anita Palepu, Head of the UBC Department of Medicine, and Dr. Raymond Ng from the Department of Computer Science.

Backed by a transformational $22.5 million gift from the Gordon B. Shrum Charitable Fund, the Network brings together researchers, clinicians, and health system partners to apply artificial intelligence to the most pressing challenges in health care.

“Artificial intelligence offers powerful possibilities—but it’s how we apply them that matters,” says Dr. Palepu.
“Our focus is on bridging cutting-edge technology with compassionate, high-quality care that puts patients and people at the centre.”

The UBC AI and Health Network is already launching a suite of research projects focused on:

  • Earlier and more accurate diagnosis
  • Reduced wait times and faster access to care
  • Clinical decision support and provider well-being
  • Accelerated discovery of new treatments

One flagship initiative aims to improve triaging for high-risk breast cancer patients using AI to analyze clinical reports and speed up access to life-saving treatment. In parallel, another project uses AI and cryo-electron microscopy to accelerate the design of antibody therapies for rapidly evolving diseases such as COVID-19 or drug-resistant cancers.

Alongside research and innovation, the Network will also help educate the next generation of health professionals to use AI ethically, effectively, and compassionately.
