The UBC Department of Medicine is proud to announce the reappointment of Dr. Anita Palepu as Head of the Department for a second five-year term, effective until June 30, 2029.
Dr. Palepu is a professor and Eric W. Hamber Chair in the Department of Medicine, a co-lead of the UBC Data Science and Health research excellence cluster, and the Head of the Department of Medicine at Providence Health Care. As a founding member of the department’s Equity Committee, she has been instrumental in fostering an inclusive and equitable environment across all areas of the department’s mission.
A general internal medicine specialist, Dr. Palepu’s research focuses on urban health, with a particular emphasis on addressing the needs of vulnerable populations. Her dedication to improving health outcomes has garnered national and international recognition, including her induction as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2021, one of the highest honours in Canadian academic medicine.
Dr. Palepu has also made significant contributions to medical education and mentorship. Her numerous awards, including the prestigious Graydon Meneilly Award for Excellence in Mentoring, reflect her exceptional commitment to nurturing future leaders and advancing the equity and academic excellence of the department.
As she enters her second term, Dr. Palepu will continue to drive the Department of Medicine’s strategic vision outlined in Transforming Health Together. Her collaborative leadership will be key in advancing the department’s priorities in research, education, clinical care, and organizational development, aligning with the Faculty of Medicine’s overarching goals.
