The British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS awarded the CIHR Gold Leaf Prize for Impact!

Congratulations to Dr. Julio Montaner and the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS for winning the CIHR Gold Leaf Prize for Impact!

CIHR presented the award to the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, “in acknowledgement of the organization’s 25 years of providing care and treatment for those living with HIV, educating health professionals, and promoting evidence-based policy to protect people from the virus.” Read the full list of winners here.

Dr. Julio Montaner is Professor in the Department of Medicine and Head, UBC Division of AIDS, and the Director of the UBC/Providence Health Care BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS.  His work has established the global standard of care for HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention and he continues to provide leadership in the international HIV/AIDS research community. He is known for his work on HAART (Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy), the discovery of triple therapy as an effective treatment for HIV, and the creation of the “Treatment as Prevention” Strategy. His work as a physician, scientist, and advocate has forged an unprecedented new path in the course of HIV treatment, care and prevention, as well as the sustainability of HIV care – starting in the province of British Columbia and expanding across the world.
