It is with great pleasure that we announce Dr. Ted Steiner as Head, UBC Division of Infectious Diseases, effective January 1, 2020.
Dr. Steiner is a Full Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and has been the Associate Head of the UBC and VGH Divisions of Infectious Diseases. He is an Associate Member of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.
Dr. Steiner is recognized both nationally and internationally for his research work on immune responses to C. difficile infection (CDI) and the development of cellular therapy for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He currently holds grants as principal investigator from CIHR and Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada and leads five active investigator initiated clinical trials involving CDI, ulcerative colitis, multidrug-resistant bacteria, and antibiotic allergies. Dr. Steiner’s clinical expertise is in general consultative infectious diseases, with a particular interest in infectious diarrhea and tropical medicine. He has established himself as an independent clinician scientist at VCHRI and has recently been appointed as the Medical Director of the VCHRI Clinical Research Unit.
Dr. Steiner is a sought-after mentor and an excellent teacher. He has been actively engaged in teaching and has supervised a large number of students and trainees at all levels throughout his career. He is the Research Chair and a long-standing member of the Infectious Diseases Residency Training Committee.
Dr. Steiner has reviewed for numerous peer-reviewed journals and has served on grant review panels for national and international granting agencies. He is a long-standing member on many University, health authority and scholarly committees.
Dr. Steiner is a successful researcher, excellent teacher and experienced administrator. He has held a number of leadership and administrative roles at the University and the hospital. He is a highly valued member of the Division and the Department. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Steiner on his appointment and wishing him all the best in his new role.
