It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Emerita Dr. Moira Chan-Yeung on September 6, 2024. Her loss is felt profoundly within the UBC Department of Medicine and the Respiratory Medicine community.
Dr. Chan-Yeung was a highly distinguished Canadian physician and scientist, celebrated for her contributions to respiratory and occupational medicine. Born in Hong Kong, she earned her medical degree from the University of Hong Kong in 1960 and later moved to Vancouver, where she built a remarkable career in clinical practice and research, joining UBC in 1973.
She was particularly known for her pioneering research on occupational lung diseases, including her crucial work linking asthma to specific occupational environments, particularly asthma caused by wood dust exposure in the forestry industry. Her findings have significantly influenced workplace health and safety standards, protecting countless workers from respiratory illnesses. Her expertise garnered her numerous accolades, including the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Thoracic Society and the Alice Hamilton Award for “Major and Lasting Contribution in Occupational Health” from the American Industrial Hygiene Association in 2000.
Dr. Chan-Yeung was dedicated to advancing public health in Canada and Hong Kong, tirelessly advocating for improved healthcare systems and disease prevention. Her commitment to medicine, education, and research leaves a lasting legacy in both communities.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
