Date: Friday November 21, 2021

Time: 12:00pm – 1:30pm PST

Location: Virtual Zoom Meeting (Meeting link will be provided to registered participants)

Speakers: Dr. Colleen Varcoe and Dr. Elder Roberta Price

The iCON Indigenous Project Team/UBC Digital Emergency Medicine are honoured to have Dr. Elder Roberta Price and Dr. Colleen Varcoe as our guest speakers for this session, to share their knowledge about intergenerational trauma and how colonialism affects the health and wellbeing of Indigenous people.

Dr. Elder Roberta is of Coast Salish heritage from the Snuneymuxw and Cowichan Nations and is an Elder Advisor and Research Partner at the University of British Columbia School of Nursing. Dr. Elder Roberta has been involved in studies related to structural and interpersonal violence and trauma – including colonialism, racism, and poverty – and their effects on health care access and quality for Indigenous people.

Dr. Colleen Varcoe is a professor in the UBC School of Nursing. She is of Indigenous (Cherokee) and immigrant (English) heritage. Dr. Varcoe has studied how to promote equity-oriented healthcare (cultural safety, harm reduction, and trauma- and violence-informed care) at the organizational level and worked with Indigenous communities and organizations in health care and criminal justice contexts.

In this coming session, the speakers will discuss topics such as the intersections among historical and contemporary forms of violence and the pathways of harm to Indigenous peoples including stigma, discrimination and epigenetics. This session hopes to provide guidance for health care professionals to create culturally and emotionally safe organizations and practices and contribute to meaningful change in health care cultures.

Registration is required for all participants. Link to register: https://learninghub.phsa.ca/Courses/24559
