Two UBC Department of Medicine Faculty Awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal

We are proud to share that Dr. Chris Carlsten (Head, Division of Respiratory Medicine) and Dr. Stephen Lam (Professor, Division of Respiratory Medicine), have been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of their outstanding contributions to lung health in Canada.

This national honour, presented to just 39 individuals across the country and only three in British Columbia, was coordinated by the Canadian Lung Association and celebrates exceptional leadership in advancing respiratory health through research, clinical excellence, and innovation.

Dr. Chris Carlsten was nominated by the Canadian Lung Association for his impactful work on air pollution and occupational lung health. His research investigates how pollutants such as diesel exhaust affect lung function over time and increase the risk of chronic respiratory conditions. As a clinician-scientist, he also cares for patients exposed to environmental and workplace toxins, helping to translate cutting-edge research into practical care and public health solutions.

Dr. Stephen Lam was jointly nominated by the Canadian Lung Association and Lung Cancer Canada for his leadership in lung cancer research and screening innovation. His work has advanced early detection and risk assessment through the development of prediction tools, the use of AI in interpreting screening CT scans, and improved bronchoscopic techniques for identifying early-stage lung cancer. His research helped lead to the launch of Canada’s first province-wide lung cancer screening program, implemented in B.C. in 2022.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Carlsten and Dr. Lam on this prestigious recognition. Their commitment to advancing lung health continues to shape the future of respiratory medicine in B.C., across Canada, and beyond.
