The common theme through most of my research career has been the search for various therapies to improve the outcomes of patients who have entered an unstable and high risk phase of their coronary artery disease, and the use of clot-preventing drugs to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation.
antithrombotic therapies for acute ischemic syndromes and for atrial fibrillation; post-myocardial infarction arrhythmias; rmyocardial infarction size measurement and modification.
My earlier research was focused on the measurement and modification of the amount of heart damage resulting from a heart attack (myocardial infarction), including large studies of “clot busting drugs” (streptokinase and tPA). The less the damage from a heart attack, the better the survival and function of the patient. I have studied aspirin for the prevention of heart attack and death in patients with unstable angina. Aspirin has had an enormous positive impact and has been standard therapy for this condition since our Canadian study in the mid 1980’s. Working with colleagues, I investigated the use of warfarin for preventing stroke in atrial fibrillation and assessment of the risk factors for stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation. My present work is primarily as a senior colleague in studies of the best route for vascular access in patients undergoing angioplasty for acute coronary syndrome, acute clot removal in patients with a heart attack (coronary thrombectomy), strategies for improving outcomes for patients found to have multivessel coronary artery disease at the time of a heart attack, and improvement of outcomes following coronary bypass surgery using a new antiplatelet drug.
