Dr. Martin McKeown appointed Head, Division of Neurology

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Martin McKeown as Head, Division of Neurology, for a five-year term effective June 1, 2023.

Dr. McKeown is a full Professor and the Pacific Parkinson’s Research Institute (PPRI)/UBC Chair in Parkinson’s Research. Previously, he was the Director at the Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre (PPRC). He is also an associate member of the UBC Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Dr. McKeown completed his Engineering Physics, Medicine, and Neurology training at McMaster, University of Toronto, and University of Western Ontario, respectively. He then completed a three-year research fellowship at the Computational Neurobiology Laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego before starting as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at Duke University. He was recruited to UBC in 2003. He has been responsible for a variety of peer-reviewed research projects funded through the National Institute of Health (US-NIH), the National Parkinson’s Foundation (US-NPF), the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the International Association of Translational Neuroscience, and the (US) Whitaker Foundation. He was a member of the Neuroscience A (NSA) Canadian CIHR Scientific peer review committee as well as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Parkinson’s Society of Canada. He has authored over 180 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters.  His interests include examining novel treatments for Parkinson’s and exploring how Engineering methods and data science can be used to enrich the lives of people with Parkinson’s.
